What is a torque converter?

The torque converter is a fluid coupling for automatic transmissions that allows the engine to transfer power to the transmission. When accelerating, the torque converter transfers increased torque to the transmission.

In a high performance application, particularly a car used for drag racing, you want your torque converter to stall at the RPM where your engine has its peak torque output, giving you the hardest launch possible.There are also two types of stall; the foot brake stall and the flash stall.

Which side of the torque converter does the bolt go on?

Torque converters that require a bolt and nut should have the bolt installed from the engine side of the flexplate and the nut installed from the converter side. Failure to install the bolts and nuts in this manner may result in interference of the bolts with the rear of the engine block.

What happens to the torque converter when in neutral?

When in neutral, park, or slowing to a stop, the torque converter isolates the engine rotation from the transmission. This prevents stalling by allowing the engine to run while the transmission is stopped.
