last week i had this truck with a cat motor and a bendix compressor and dry that sprutters air at unload valve on compresssor , i get rebuild kit and then pop off valve on top of compressor starts leaking air bad..call around and no parts but u can plug it..then i get to work monday truck is broke down 200 miles away..now get this first i ask driver to un screw ...

What causes an air dryer to keep popping off ? Check for air leaks in the line between the air governor and the drier pop off valve . This should be the center tap in the governor. if it is an ad-9 drier and it leaks through the purge valve after its initial main purge and doesn’t stop till it is back on the build cycle check the check valve in the discharge port.

If it's a Bendix compressor the unloader plunger may be gummed up and it takes 140 psi to pop it. Check the intake port and see if there is a lot of oil or varnish in there. Nope. The problem is in the dryer. Element break down and contamination. It needed to be replaced. The air was backing up from the wet tank due to the contamination of the check valve (from the air dryer element) which was the cause of the problems I had and allowing the compressor to kick back on so soon.

All (that I know of) Bendix air compressors use this style of pressure relief valve . The Bendix part number is 801116 with a description of CAT ST-4 Discharge Safety Valve . These valves do fail on their own sometimes, but check over you system just to make sure that you don't have a issue.

Of course the pressure originates at the compressor and not the wet tank. If the purge valve was leaking that much air constantly you wouldn’t ever reach 120 lbs in the wet tank. Also if the tank pressure exceeds the safety pop off ...
