I’m not sure if there’s a way to directly convert to your side until you have three colonists, then one can be a moral leader and use the conversion power to get people on your side. I've had way more luck in using the convert command that's available to moral guides than when I use the actual conversion ritual for some reason. They share the same cooldown, but the convert command seems to at least chip away at certainty with every use whereas the conversion ritual can just outright fail and has a chance of doing nothing.
