When I was a line mechanic '68 - '73, many 332 - 352 - 390 Fords would show spotty compression like yours. If you tested it 3 times, you got 3 different readings. Older guys told me it was a hydraulic lifter issue, but couldn't explain exactly what the issue was - they said if it wasn't missing, don't worry about it.

FE 390 pistons are 4.050, consequently the 300 block needs to be over bored .050. Some feel this is too much for longevity on such a thin wall casting. On a race engine probably ok. On a d.d. where 100,000 miles + is expected, probably not ok. I think the 351 pistons will go. Same bore amp; compression height.

There are two 390 pistons : The low compression , like the H and Y code 2bbl, 390s got a dished piston . Nearly all others, Z, P, IP, S( 390 GT), X-code 390 2bbl, and others got the flat top. And as always, there are oddball combinations out there, so you have to accept this information is not the last word on Ford parts.
