Here’s a simple way to convert a grayscale image to a red, green, blue color image using a given colormap: rgb = ind2rgb(gray2ind(im,255),jet(255)); Replace the 255 with the number of colors in your grayscale image. Convert to Grayscale. Converting images to grayscale is not unlike the effect produced by using the Desaturate function. The primary difference is that converting an image to grayscale results in the image having the color channels removed. Thus, an image that has been converted to grayscale cannot have color added to it.

I’m attempting to add color to some greyscale icons (i.e. all three channels are identical). I want to map the colors such that the brightest grey becomes one specific color , the darkest grey becomes another specific color , and all the greys in between are translated into colors along the gradient between those two specific colors.
