I have Gimp 2.10 I want to convert an image to an icon. I did that alright with some other tools - online web thing. But I need an icon of lt;6KB and the web thing produced something around 30KB. all of my folders are in PNG format 512x512 pixels. it is easier to work with larger dimension photo rather than 256x256 pixels, and most of folder icon templates are in 512x512 format as well. i don't convert my PNG to ICO because 1. i am lazy 2. i am using a mac, there's no point for me to convert them and keep ico file in my computer.

Having tried both GIMP and ImageMagick for converting a transparent PNG file to a transparent ICO file, icofx gave a much better image quality for the 32x32 and 16x16 transparent icons - these are the ones that are seen the most as they appear on the task bar and the application icon in the top left hand corner.

I don't know if PS will quot;save asquot; a . ico , if not GIMP certainly does. I've been using it for the conversions of png 's to ico files myself. I don't think the quality will suffer, but I think it's best to resize at least to something approaching the size they will be displayed at.
