The air in the lines is bled out by simply raising and lowering the top assembly (with the fill plug out). The narrow opening at the top of the container fits into the 'hole' nicely and one can cut the container open so the new fluid may be 'pored in'. The convertible top and hydraulic system is covered fairly well in there. The system does run on brake fluid . The shop manual says to use quot;Super #11quot; fluid . I didn't know what that was until I found in the shop manual that that's what GM called brake fluid in 1955. ATF is totally incompatible with brake fluid !!!!

Then remove the pump from the rubber feet locks and remove the fill plug and drain the pump reservoir. That should pretty much empty it.

Draining and replacing the fluid is a neglected subject for most convertible brands' maintenance programs - I don't know if Chevy is an exception. I personally would suggest to replace the fluid after some ten years in general, and more often if you live in a hot climate and are using the top a lot.
