What is CAF?

Core Audio Format (CAF) is Apple's audio container designed to overcome the file size and sample rate limitations of AIFF and WAV.

What is TTA?

True Audio (TTA) is a free, real-time lossless audio codec that provides efficient compression without compromising audio quality.

When Should You Use CAF vs TTA?

CAF vs TTA: Key Differences

• •The core technical difference: CAF relies on lossless compression whereas TTA uses lossless compression.
• •Neither format changes compression philosophy — both are lossless compression — so any size differences are due to encoding efficiency, not a shift in quality approach.
• •How transparency is handled: TTA supports transparency, so alpha information is preserved during conversion.
• •File sizes: CAF files typically range Flexible, supports very large files and TTA files 40-50% smaller than WAV.
• •CAF is optimized for apple audio production, professional editing while TTA is designed for lossless audio compression, archival — choose based on your specific workflow needs

Advantages of CAF

• ✓At its core, CAF relies on lossless encoding — a design choice that makes it perfect for Apple audio production, professional editing.
• ✓You won't run into compatibility issues with CAF — it's a universal standard across platforms.
• ✓File size management with CAF: larger files guaranteed to match the original exactly.
• ✓Every major application in the Apple audio production, professional editing space supports CAF natively.

Advantages of TTA

• ✓TTA compresses data using lossless methods, keeping file sizes manageable for Lossless audio compression, archival.
• ✓Industry-wide support means TTA files open anywhere — from legacy systems to the latest devices.
• ✓Lossless quality makes TTA the gold standard for archival and master copies.
• ✓From professional software to open-source alternatives, TTA works out of the box.

Industry Applications

Best Practices for CAF to TTA Conversion

• →For CAF to TTA: match the sample rate and bit depth to your delivery platform — 44.1 kHz / 16-bit is the standard for music
• →Apply loudness normalization (LUFS) before conversion to ensure consistent volume across your audio library
• →TTA prioritizes quality — ensure your storage can accommodate the resulting file sizes
• →Check that metadata tags (artist, album, track number) survive the conversion
• →Convert a short segment first to verify quality at your chosen bitrate
• →Keep a lossless master copy in case you need to re-encode for a different platform
