What is DTS?

DTS (Digital Theater Systems) is a multi-channel surround sound format used in Blu-ray, DVDs, and movie theaters.

What is VOX?

Dialogic VOX is a compressed speech audio format optimized for telephony systems, voice mail, and interactive voice response.

When Should You Use DTS vs VOX?

DTS vs VOX: Key Differences

• •DTS and VOX diverge on compression: lossy compression for the source, lossy compression for the target.
• •Both formats share lossy compression, so quality behavior is similar across the two — file size differences come from algorithm efficiency rather than compression philosophy.
• •Alpha channel support: VOX lacks transparency support.
• •DTS files are typically Large for multi-channel audio while VOX files range Very small, ideal for voice storage
• •Primary audience: DTS is built for movie theater audio, blu-ray surround, home theater scenarios, while VOX focuses on telephone systems, voice mail, ivr systems — pick the format that matches your output requirement.

Advantages of DTS

• ✓The lossy nature of DTS means file sizes stay reasonable while handling Movie theater audio, Blu-ray surround, home theater efficiently.
• ✓From mobile devices to enterprise servers, DTS is recognized and supported everywhere.
• ✓Storage and bandwidth costs drop significantly when using DTS thanks to its efficient compression.
• ✓DTS is a first-class citizen in all major software ecosystems, from creative suites to development environments.

Advantages of VOX

• ✓VOX uses lossy compression tailored for Telephone systems, voice mail, IVR systems.
• ✓VOX is supported natively on virtually every device, browser, and operating system.
• ✓VOX files are compact and quick to transfer, even over slow connections.
• ✓VOX integrates seamlessly with all major creative tools and workflows.

Troubleshooting DTS to VOX Conversion

• !Clicks or pops in the converted VOX → sample rate conversion can introduce artifacts; use a clean multiple of the source rate
• !VOX file has silence at the beginning or end → trim the source DTS file before converting to avoid unnecessary padding
• !Stereo image collapsed after converting DTS to VOX → verify that the converter preserves channel mapping for multichannel audio
• !The converted VOX clips or distorts at peaks → reduce the gain or apply a limiter before conversion to prevent hard clipping
