What is MP2?

MPEG Layer II (MP2) is an audio codec standard in broadcast and DVD, offering robust compression for professional use.

When Should You Use M4B vs MP2?

M4B vs MP2: Key Differences

• •M4B uses lossy compression while MP2 uses lossy compression — both take the same approach to file size management.
• •Since both M4B and MP2 use lossy compression, the quality characteristics are comparable — differences in file size come down to how efficiently each format implements compression.
• •Alpha channel support: MP2 lacks transparency support.
• •M4B files are typically Compact, optimized for speech while MP2 files range Smaller than uncompressed, 128-384kbps
• •Primary audience: M4B is built for audiobooks, podcasts with chapters scenarios, while MP2 focuses on broadcast audio, dvd audio tracks, legacy video — pick the format that matches your output requirement.

• ✓M4B delivers impressive compression ratios, shrinking files dramatically while keeping visual quality high.
• ✓You will find M4B support built into virtually every tool that handles Audiobooks, podcasts with chapters — no plugins or converters needed.

Advantages of MP2

• ✓MP2 compresses data using lossy methods, keeping file sizes manageable for Broadcast audio, DVD audio tracks, legacy video.
• ✓Industry-wide support means MP2 files open anywhere — from legacy systems to the latest devices.

• !MP2 file has silence at the beginning or end → trim the source M4B file before converting to avoid unnecessary padding
• !Stereo image collapsed after converting M4B to MP2 → verify that the converter preserves channel mapping for multichannel audio
• !The converted MP2 clips or distorts at peaks → reduce the gain or apply a limiter before conversion to prevent hard clipping
