What is VOX?

Dialogic VOX is a compressed speech audio format optimized for telephony systems, voice mail, and interactive voice response.

What is M4A?

M4A (MPEG-4 Audio) is Apple's preferred audio format, typically using AAC compression for high-quality audio at small file sizes.

When Should You Use VOX vs M4A?

VOX vs M4A: Key Differences

• •The core technical difference: VOX relies on lossy compression whereas M4A uses lossy compression.
• •Neither format changes compression philosophy — both are lossy compression — so any size differences are due to encoding efficiency, not a shift in quality approach.
• •Transparency: N/A
• •File sizes: VOX files typically range Very small, ideal for voice storage and M4A files Similar to MP3 at equivalent quality.
• •Use case fit: VOX targets telephone systems, voice mail, ivr systems and M4A targets apple ecosystem, itunes, podcasting — your choice depends on which workflow stage you are serving.

Advantages of VOX

• ✓VOX uses lossy compression tailored for Telephone systems, voice mail, IVR systems.
• ✓VOX is supported natively on virtually every device, browser, and operating system.
• ✓VOX files are compact and quick to transfer, even over slow connections.
• ✓VOX integrates seamlessly with all major creative tools and workflows.

Advantages of M4A

• ✓The lossy nature of M4A means file sizes stay reasonable while handling Apple ecosystem, iTunes, podcasting efficiently.
• ✓From mobile devices to enterprise servers, M4A is recognized and supported everywhere.
• ✓Storage and bandwidth costs drop significantly when using M4A thanks to its efficient compression.
• ✓M4A is a first-class citizen in all major software ecosystems, from creative suites to development environments.

Industry Applications

Best Practices for VOX to M4A Conversion

• →For VOX to M4A: match the sample rate and bit depth to your delivery platform — 44.1 kHz / 16-bit is the standard for music
• →Apply loudness normalization (LUFS) before conversion to ensure consistent volume across your audio library
• →M4A prioritizes quality — ensure your storage can accommodate the resulting file sizes
• →Check that metadata tags (artist, album, track number) survive the conversion
• →Convert a short segment first to verify quality at your chosen bitrate
• →Keep a lossless master copy in case you need to re-encode for a different platform
