What is ABW?

AbiWord (ABW) is an open-source word processing format used by the AbiWord application, providing cross-platform document compatibility.

What is TSV?

Tab-Separated Values (TSV) is a tabular data format using tabs as delimiters, often preferred when data contains commas.

When Should You Use ABW vs TSV?

ABW vs TSV: Key Differences

• •ABW uses lossless compression while TSV uses lossless compression — both take the same approach to file size management.
• •Since both ABW and TSV use lossless compression, the quality characteristics are comparable — differences in file size come down to how efficiently each format implements compression.
• •Transparency: N/A
• •ABW files are typically 50KB to 5MB while TSV files range Compact, similar to CSV
• •ABW is optimized for open-source word processing, cross-platform docs while TSV is designed for data science, spreadsheet processing, import/export — choose based on your specific workflow needs

Advantages of ABW

• ✓ABW compresses data using lossless methods, keeping file sizes manageable for Open-source word processing, cross-platform docs.
• ✓Industry-wide support means ABW files open anywhere — from legacy systems to the latest devices.
• ✓Lossless quality makes ABW the gold standard for archival and master copies.
• ✓From professional software to open-source alternatives, ABW works out of the box.

Advantages of TSV

• ✓TSV uses lossless compression tailored for Data science, spreadsheet processing, import/export.
• ✓TSV is supported natively on virtually every device, browser, and operating system.
• ✓TSV files are bit-for-bit perfect, preserving every pixel and sample for professional work.
• ✓TSV integrates seamlessly with all major creative tools and workflows.

Industry Applications

Best Practices for ABW to TSV Conversion

• →Before converting ABW to TSV, review the document structure — multi-column layouts, text boxes, and floating images behave differently across formats
• →Export a PDF preview alongside the TSV file so you have a reference of how the document should look
• →Check that hyperlinks and cross-references survived the ABW to TSV conversion — some formats handle links differently
• →Run a spell check before conversion to avoid propagating errors into the final document
• →Keep the original editable file in case the conversion introduces layout shifts
• →Test the output on at least two different applications or devices

Troubleshooting ABW to TSV Conversion

• !ABW to TSV formatting looks off → complex layouts with tables and columns may shift between formats
• !Fonts render differently in TSV → embed fonts or use standard web-safe fonts before converting
• !Images missing from the TSV output → ensure images are embedded in ABW, not linked externally
• !Tracked changes disappeared after converting ABW to TSV → some document formats don't support revision tracking
