When Should You Use UFO vs TTF?

UFO vs TTF: Key Differences

• •UFO uses lossless compression while TTF uses lossless compression — both take the same approach to file size management.
• •Since both UFO and TTF use lossless compression, the quality characteristics are comparable — differences in file size come down to how efficiently each format implements compression.
• •How transparency is handled: TTF supports transparency, so alpha information is preserved during conversion.
• •File sizes: UFO files typically range 100KB to 10MB+ depending on glyph count and TTF files 20KB to 200KB per font.
• •Use case fit: UFO targets font design and editing, collaborative font development, glyphs/robofont and TTF targets desktop publishing, web fonts, documents — your choice depends on which workflow stage you are serving.

Industry Applications

Best Practices for UFO to TTF Conversion

• →Converting UFO to TTF: check that glyph coverage is preserved — some formats have character limitations
• →Use TTF for cross-platform compatibility
• →Test fonts across different browsers and operating systems after conversion
• →Always keep a backup of your original files before converting
• →Choose the appropriate quality settings for your specific use case

Troubleshooting UFO to TTF Conversion

• !The converted TTF font has incorrect metrics → advance width and kerning values may differ between formats despite identical glyphs
• !TTF file looks heavier or lighter than UFO → font rendering engines handle weight and anti-aliasing differently per format
• !OpenType features (ligatures, swashes) lost after conversion to TTF → verify the target format supports advanced typographic features
• !Variable font axes missing from the converted TTF → variable font support varies significantly between formats
