What is CRW?

CRW (image/x-canon-crw) uses lossless compression optimized for legacy canon dslr photography, raw image processing. Canon Raw CRW - original Canon RAW format before CR2

What is ICO?

ICO (Icon) is a file format for computer icons in Microsoft Windows. ICO files contain one or more small images for application icons and favicons.

When Should You Use CRW vs ICO?

CRW vs ICO: Key Differences

• •The core technical difference: CRW relies on lossless compression whereas ICO uses lossless compression.
• •Neither format changes compression philosophy — both are lossless compression — so any size differences are due to encoding efficiency, not a shift in quality approach.
• •How transparency is handled: ICO supports transparency, so alpha information is preserved during conversion.
• •ICO files tend to be differently sized than CRW
• •Primary audience: CRW is built for legacy canon dslr photography, raw image processing scenarios, while ICO focuses on favicons, application icons, platform-specific assets — pick the format that matches your output requirement.

Advantages of CRW

• ✓At its core, CRW relies on lossless encoding — a design choice that makes it perfect for Legacy Canon DSLR photography, raw image processing.
• ✓You won't run into compatibility issues with CRW — it's a universal standard across platforms.
• ✓File size management with CRW: larger files guaranteed to match the original exactly.
• ✓Every major application in the Legacy Canon DSLR photography, raw image processing space supports CRW natively.

Advantages of ICO

• ✓ICO applies lossless compression specifically calibrated for Favicons, application icons, platform-specific assets.

Best Practices for CRW to ICO Conversion

• →Before converting CRW to ICO, decide whether you need maximum quality or smallest file size — this determines which format truly fits
• →Save a master copy in a lossless format before converting to ICO — you cannot recover detail lost during lossy compression
• →Check the color profile: CRW images may use a wider gamut than ICO supports, causing a visible shift after conversion
• →Resize images to the final display dimensions before converting — this avoids unnecessary processing of oversized files
• →Run a single test conversion first to verify quality meets your standards
• →Strip unnecessary metadata to reduce file size after conversion
