What is IIQ?

Phase One IIQ is a professional medium-format raw format used by Phase One digital backs, delivering exceptional image quality for commercial photography.

What is TGA?

Truevision TGA/Targa is a raster graphics format widely used in video editing, 3D modeling, and legacy computer graphics.

When Should You Use IIQ vs TGA?

IIQ vs TGA: Key Differences

• •IIQ and TGA diverge on compression: lossless compression for the source, lossless compression for the target.
• •Since both IIQ and TGA use lossless compression, the quality characteristics are comparable — differences in file size come down to how efficiently each format implements compression.
• •How transparency is handled: TGA supports transparency, so alpha information is preserved during conversion.
• •Storage footprint: 50-150MB per image from medium-format backs for IIQ vs Larger than BMP, smaller than an uncompressed TIFF for TGA.
• •IIQ is optimized for professional studio photography, digital back capture while TGA is designed for video editing, 3d textures, legacy graphics — choose based on your specific workflow needs

Advantages of IIQ

• ✓IIQ compresses data using lossless methods, keeping file sizes manageable for Professional studio photography, digital back capture.
• ✓Industry-wide support means IIQ files open anywhere — from legacy systems to the latest devices.
• ✓Lossless quality makes IIQ the gold standard for archival and master copies.
• ✓From Adobe Photoshop to open-source alternatives, IIQ works out of the box.

Advantages of TGA

• ✓TGA applies lossless compression specifically calibrated for Video editing, 3D textures, legacy graphics.
• ✓TGA enjoys broad native support across operating systems, browsers, and creative tools alike.
• ✓TGA guarantees every bit of the original data survives — no approximations, no shortcuts.
• ✓You will find TGA support built into virtually every tool that handles Video editing, 3D textures, legacy graphics — no plugins or converters needed.

Common Use Cases for IIQ to TGA Conversion

• Video thumbnail creation
• Certificate and badge design
• Websites and online content
• Print materials and publications
• Social media posts and ads
• Digital photography and editing

Industry Applications

Best Practices for IIQ to TGA Conversion

• →Before converting IIQ to TGA, decide whether you need maximum quality or smallest file size — this determines which format truly fits
• →Save a master copy in a lossless format before converting to TGA — you cannot recover detail lost during lossy compression
• →Check the color profile: IIQ images may use a wider gamut than TGA supports, causing a visible shift after conversion
• →Resize images to the final display dimensions before converting — this avoids unnecessary processing of oversized files
• →Run a single test conversion first to verify quality meets your standards
• →Strip unnecessary metadata to reduce file size after conversion

• !Colors look different in TGA than IIQ → check color profile mismatch (sRGB vs Adobe RGB)
• !File size changed more than expected → TGA uses different compression, file size differences of 2-5x are normal
• !Transparent areas in IIQ turned white in TGA → TGA may not support transparency
