What is RW2?

Panasonic Raw v2 (RW2) contains raw sensor data from Panasonic Lumix digital cameras.

What is PNM?

Portable AnyMap (PNM) is a super-format that encompasses PBM, PGM, and PPM image types for simplified image processing.

When Should You Use RW2 vs PNM?

RW2 vs PNM: Key Differences

• •RW2 uses lossless compression while PNM uses lossless compression — both take the same approach to file size management.
• •Since both RW2 and PNM use lossless compression, the quality characteristics are comparable — differences in file size come down to how efficiently each format implements compression.
• •Transparency: N/A
• •RW2 files are typically 20-45MB per photo while PNM files range Varies by image type
• •Primary audience: RW2 is built for panasonic/lumix camera raw editing scenarios, while PNM focuses on cross-format image processing, netpbm suite — pick the format that matches your output requirement.

Advantages of RW2

• ✓RW2 uses lossless compression tailored for Panasonic/Lumix camera raw editing.
• ✓RW2 is supported natively on virtually every device, browser, and operating system.
• ✓RW2 files are bit-for-bit perfect, preserving every pixel and sample for professional work.
• ✓RW2 integrates seamlessly with all major creative tools and workflows.

Advantages of PNM

• ✓The lossless nature of PNM means file sizes stay reasonable while handling Cross-format image processing, netpbm suite efficiently.
• ✓From mobile devices to enterprise servers, PNM is recognized and supported everywhere.
• ✓The trade-off for PNM's perfection is larger files — but for archival work, it is worth every megabyte.
• ✓PNM is a first-class citizen in all major software ecosystems, from creative suites to development environments.

Troubleshooting RW2 to PNM Conversion

• !PNM shows visible compression artifacts → lower the compression level or switch to a lossless variant
• !The converted PNM image looks washed out → the source RW2 likely uses a wider color space than PNM supports
• !PNM file is much larger than expected → check if the conversion preserved an unnecessarily high resolution
• !Text in the converted PNM looks fuzzy → text-heavy images benefit from higher quality settings or a different output format
