What is VP9?

VP9 is Google's next-generation open-source video codec delivering 50% better compression than VP8 for 4K streaming.

What is DVD?

DVD Video uses MPEG-2 compression in a VOB container, the standard format for DVD-Video movie discs.

When Should You Use VP9 vs DVD?

VP9 vs DVD: Key Differences

• •VP9 uses lossy compression while DVD uses lossy compression — both take the same approach to file size management.
• •Since both VP9 and DVD use lossy compression, the quality characteristics are comparable — differences in file size come down to how efficiently each format implements compression.
• •Transparency: N/A
• •File sizes: VP9 files typically range Smaller than H.264 at same quality and DVD files 4.7GB for single-layer DVD.
• •Primary audience: VP9 is built for youtube 4k, web video, chrome streaming scenarios, while DVD focuses on dvd authoring, video backup, movie ripping — pick the format that matches your output requirement.

Advantages of VP9

• ✓VP9 uses lossy compression tailored for YouTube 4K, web video, Chrome streaming.
• ✓VP9 is supported natively on virtually every device, browser, and operating system.
• ✓VP9 files are compact and quick to transfer, even over slow connections.
• ✓VP9 integrates seamlessly with all major web development tools and workflows.

Advantages of DVD

• ✓The lossy nature of DVD means file sizes stay reasonable while handling DVD authoring, video backup, movie ripping efficiently.
• ✓From mobile devices to enterprise servers, DVD is recognized and supported everywhere.
• ✓Storage and bandwidth costs drop significantly when using DVD thanks to its efficient compression.
• ✓DVD is a first-class citizen in all major software ecosystems, from creative suites to development environments.

Best Practices for VP9 to DVD Conversion

• →For VP9 to DVD: encode at the target platform's native resolution — upscaling or downscaling adds unnecessary artifacts
• →Test a short clip before converting the entire VP9 file — this confirms DVD settings produce acceptable quality
• →DVD is widely supported but choose bitrate carefully to balance quality and file size
• →Use constant bitrate (CBR) for streaming delivery and variable bitrate (VBR) for archival storage
• →Keep the original file in case you need to re-encode with different settings
• →Check audio sync after conversion — container changes can sometimes cause drift

• !Audio out of sync after VP9 to DVD conversion → try re-muxing with a different container format
• !DVD quality is too low → increase the bitrate; for 1080p video, 8-15 Mbps is recommended
• !File size increased converting VP9 to DVD → lossless or higher-bitrate outputs naturally produce larger files
