What is ABW?

AbiWord (ABW) is an open-source word processing format used by the AbiWord application, providing cross-platform document compatibility.

What is PPT?

PPT is the legacy binary presentation format used by Microsoft PowerPoint 97-2003 for slideshows and presentations.

When Should You Use ABW vs PPT?

ABW vs PPT: Key Differences

• •ABW and PPT diverge on compression: lossless compression for the source, lossy compression for the target.
• •Moving from ABW (lossy) to PPT (lossy) means the output file will be significantly smaller — but at the cost of some visual fidelity.
• •How transparency is handled: PPT does not support alpha channels — transparent areas in the source will become opaque.
• •Storage footprint: 50KB to 5MB for ABW vs 100KB to 30MB for PPT.
• •ABW is optimized for open-source word processing, cross-platform docs while PPT is designed for legacy presentations, older systems — choose based on your specific workflow needs

Advantages of ABW

• ✓ABW uses lossless compression tailored for Open-source word processing, cross-platform docs.
• ✓ABW is supported natively on virtually every device, browser, and operating system.
• ✓ABW files are bit-for-bit perfect, preserving every pixel and sample for professional work.
• ✓ABW integrates seamlessly with all major creative tools and workflows.

Advantages of PPT

• ✓At its core, PPT relies on lossy encoding — a design choice that makes it perfect for Legacy presentations, older systems.
• ✓You won't run into compatibility issues with PPT — it's a universal standard across platforms.
• ✓File size management with PPT: aggressive compression with minimal visible quality loss.
• ✓Every major application in the Legacy presentations, older systems space supports PPT natively.

• !Page breaks moved after converting ABW to PPT → margin and spacing settings differ between document formats
• !Tables in the converted PPT are misaligned → complex merged cells and nested tables are handled differently by each format
• !Headers and footers missing from PPT → verify that the converter supports header/footer extraction for your source format
• !Special characters appear as gibberish in PPT → the source file may use a different character encoding than expected
